When speaking of credit cards, three names are easily recognizable – Visa, Master Card and American Express.  We have heard these names since the early 50s when the first credit card has been introduced in the market.   In this article, let’s take a closer look at these top credit card logos and compare the differences of one from the other.

American Express- the First Credit Card in the Market

The first credit card was introduced in the market in 1958 by American Express or AMEX.  Today, you can find a wide variety of credit cards issued by American Express.  Amex operates in more than 130 countries and offer personal credit cards, rewards credit cards, student credit cards, credit cards for small businesses and even corporate credit cards.

VISA and MasterCard – Not Credit Cards?

Have you noticed how most credit cards from different issuers bear the VISA or the MasterCard logo in them?  Aside from credit cards, you can also see the Visa and Master Card logos in prepaid debit cards.  This is because Visa and Master Card are not credit card companies.  They are payment system services used by different banks and issuers all over the world.

Credit card and prepaid debit card that bear the Visa and Master Card logo are accepted in more than 20 million establishments and merchants worldwide.  Credit Cards by Amex on the other hand can only be used at establishments and stores which accept the Amex payment system.

It is a good idea to get at least one credit card or a debit card with is supported by either Visa or MasterCard.  This is especially true for people who are often on the road or who travel abroad.  Even if you already have an Amex card, having a Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card can back you up during emergencies when you need to make a payment without cash.
